LHS ROBOTICS TEAM VISIT
Slack Elementary had a visit from the Lufkin High School Robotics Team last Friday, December 2, 2011. The team is led by Mrs. Robyn Segrest- Career Tech teacher at Lufkin High School. The team members that were able to come were: Jai Bahkta, Cody Belcher, Alex Clifton and Chance Cross. They brought their robot- The Pantherbot! They constructed this robot last year and competed in contests in Houston. The Pantherbot showed us how it could kick a soccer ball and perform many more maneuvers. The team talked to our students about how important it is to work together to accomplish our goals. They also allowed the students to ask any question they wanted to about Robotics.Slack Elementary is planning to start our own Robotics team this year. The LHS Robotics Team has volunteered to come and help us!
We thank them so much for their time and look forward to working with them!

RAINBOW FISH PROJECT
Rainbow Fish Project – Integrated Curriculum
Mrs. Jones’ class began their Rainbow Fish integrated curriculum project this week. Jones’ and Hill’s homeroom classes began saving empty bottles so that they could be used for the project. The purpose of the project is to reinforce the concepts of the properties of matter – specifically the states of matter – solids, liquids, and gases. Inside each bottle the students observed that all three states of matter are represented – with beads, confetti and glitter as the solids, water as the liquid, and a little extra room for air representing gas. We also discussed that the air bubbles in the bottles and in the ocean are gases. After reading the story The Rainbow Fish by Marcus Pfister, the students were separated into three groups. At Mrs. Kerry’s table the students completed the bottle project. At another table, the students used colored goldfish crackers to make arrays to reinforce their multiplication facts. Once they showed these arrays to the teacher, they used paper fish to complete the arrays for classroom display. At the Reading station, students had to put three pictures from the story in order to represent the sequence of events in the story, as well as write sentences describing each part of the story. The lesson included all subject areas: character education and Social Studies – learning the lesson from the Rainbow Fish regarding how we treat others so that we can be happy and make friends; Science concepts regarding the three states of matter; Math station to reinforce multiplication concepts; and the Reading station reinforcing sequencing story events.
